" IN AMERICA" a novel by Susan Sontag
Many of us are not far removed from the immigrant experience. My family (mother's) migrating from French Canada to the Iowa prairies via Messina N.Y. and settling there before 1856; (father's) leaving Scandinavia over 100 yrs. ago found their way to the "city of big shoulders". This is a familiar shared experience for Americans. Though if I had chosen to respond merely to this theme the significance of the novel would be lessened.
Throughout Sontag's work the theme of immigration is woven into the transformation of character, supported by environment and experience, rather than relying on it in a tautological fashion. After my reading I considered beginning this piece by writing: " It would be fair to say we are all immigrants in a world that exists as much in the imagination as it does in reality. We remain so because we are continually displaced by the flux of change in a moment of personal needs and motives."
As a point of departure Sontag developed a female character inspired by a real life counterpart, the greatest Polish actress of that day. Helena Modjeska left the European stage, and after a less than successful attempt at communal homesteading, returns to the stage becoming the most legendary American actress of the late 18th cen. The most notable of Shakespeareans, greater perhaps than the well known Edwin Booth, who plays along through the last chapter of the novel.
The immigration Sontag conceives is a reaffirmation of actual identity after its own self willed dissolution, a quest for inviolable individuality, that is shaken and rediscovered in a new environment, a reality that is adapted to rather than controlled. It is in this sense that " IN AMERICA" (winner of the 2004 National Book Award) is one of the great feminist novels of recent time. The emerging contemporary women possessing as self a deeper motive for all that social change represents. A masterpiece of writing , attaining to what modern authors have striven toward for the past 200 yrs.

One Corner Upward
When rising,towering white clouds
from far-off in the sky
come my way:
from a height where my without lives are small
I'm simply un-reminded, a simple grace they share.
I'm simply unreminded
of hurrying
and worrying away:
a place for every picture in the endless sky,
a place for anything so different
my heart can't understand,
flown one corner upward from the line.
We won't hardly stop to wonder,
why it took so long
I'm reminded
it's so natural here, to be your friend and lover.
I'm simply reminded of the picture that we meet in
when we turn along the upward corner.
In the cause of it
we can dissappear
and reappear,
touch down,dance again
walk upon these bridges
touch down, it all made sense again
I'm reminded
I'm simply reminded
by turning the upward corner.
from far-off in the sky
come my way:
from a height where my without lives are small
I'm simply un-reminded, a simple grace they share.
I'm simply unreminded
of hurrying
and worrying away:
a place for every picture in the endless sky,

Any Drop of Rain
It's trying to rain
on our world,
always takes me by surprise
Reaching up,
earth appears
closer now,
than sky.
Been falling, falling,
falling now,
takes me by surprise,
crying out my name - arriving.
Any drop of rain like this,
settled to the dust,
has breathed me,
smiled me,
unafraid to touch.
Any drop of rain like this,
wetting down the highway
has looked for me,
spoke with me,
loved, said goodbye.
Words for what remains
draw out present time,
as if all would disappear,
unable to express
all this trying to rain.

Eveyone's wings
Read between the lines
bring to mind...what words obscure
as they attempt...to contain the inner state.
the power of certain words is unmistakable
the power of certain words in what truly transpires
is unmistakable. They move us along.
We are in motion
we move toward certainty
whether we know or not
one cannot live in empty words indefinitely
they simply do not carry one along
only fall away, can't keep up with what you've become
one taste of native tongue will make you feel
how alive you are also. as alive and unmistakable
as song, enables flight........

Tales: Part II, responce to comments.
Responce to comments by Jas P. look for Spulgenine (his blog) at Google.com

"Thought-provoking stuff. You're right about the use of analogy to describe problems and suggest solutions--it communicates in a way nothing else does, and engages the imagination. Can anyone deny that our failure to figure out health care is a failure of imagination? And a failure of political will, of course. It's going to take a real dismantling of conventional wisdom and cliches to make a dent in this problem. Someone's going to have to frame the debate in a new way that can compete, sound-bite-wise, on the 24-hour news cycle. All the GOP has to do is trot out the phrase "socialized medicine" and it galvanizes their reactionary base. You're looking at this in a much bigger way than what I've just described. The idea that we could get traction on a global scale when we can't do it domestically seems crazy, but maybe crazy is just what the doctor ordered. "

Dear Jim, my first response to the idea of a human-oriented health care head space, shares with you a similar focus on Individual empowerment, Humanitarian concern and moving the issue to a very different arena of public attention. A new dialogue might begin like this. Here is a question, (what would the response be?) if taxpayers were asked what percentage of total personal tax they would target to a national health care system if this in no way changed the amount they paid. After this first question they then were asked , if you could target any amount up to 50% , how much would you allocate?
Answers to these inquires might suggest two things: the general overall disposition toward health care as a community rather than an ideological issue, and then indicate the value individual rights should have outside the restraining control of majority politics.
Follow this with a third question, if poverty definitions were properly raised to account for cost of living variances and a wider share of specific, personal (quality of life) standard deductions: how many would agree to a flat 20% tax rate(of which 50% could be personally ear-marked), how many would think this to be a good move in general policy?
Answers may suggest (as I believe) that our representative democracy needs the reform and updating now becoming possible at "Information Age" levels. It would represent a balance factor, setting a control and limits on any agenda of current majority interest, and lessen polarization of our social politic imposed by the varying ideals of social altruism which exist in our rights community as a whole. In addition to suggested (purse string) representational changes if individuals could target 100% of contributions above post-tax income to their legally accepted legislative programs, interest collectives at any income level could fully represent themselves on a voluntary basis with real fiscal limits. Give and take on all social fronts, a compromise of free and fair, could and should be an issue of individual cooperation and empowerment within our community sphere.
In as much as Darwinian concepts cannot fully explain social altruism's role in the emergence of a human specie dominated environment, and cannot begin to explain the existence of non-survival related cultural elements; few social scientists would deny that by hook or crook "Altruism" represents the best hope for such continuation. "Winner take all" morality is not sufficient to explain the existence of our rights community. We should no longer accept such an ethic as the reward for imposed political emminance in the way our government functions.
I can't help but chuckling when I think of what "Free Tax Assistance" could be in the future when it becomes a matter of mobilizing political resources. We could look on April 15th as expectently as Nov. 7th, when we hear the general proclaimation " The people have spoken, taken us down a notch, reminding us that though we've been elected for assumed capabilities we are and remain public servants.".
I need to continue at a later time on the intricacies of 'universal health care' if and when I find the time (sorry to proactively digress) after I guide the IRS later this week!

More Tales From the Crypt...
What if ? our present health care system was a patient, a patient that had just been rushed by ambulance to the emergency room of a hospital where we were the staff on duty. Simultaneously (without a second thought) we would stabilize the patient, treat immediately observable condition/symptoms and their possible complications, accurately identify/diagnose the cause(s) , then provide the most suitable, non-invasive complete therapy and follow up care. Of course, we would also cross our fingers.
On the other hand we could say "Sorry", turn out the lights and keep an eye open for customers that are not a fiscal liability. Current general thought now takes it for granted that some human rights are god given (life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness), but in practice this notion is historically incorrect. It has only been a matter of several centuries that the greater mass of humanity has been viewed and treated in terms of the "individual" rather than a category.
This "New" idea of human rights (a body of evolving philosophic concepts) has been embraced by a recent, still forming collective community of individuals. Even so, in present light the "the right to health care" has the position of being a very radical position by most standards. However, as we now regulate the practice of medicine by licensing, and a massive bulwark of legal /judicial control, we have created a situation of limited access to the practice of medicine by individuals for themselves and others as they see fit to consent to.
This is a prudent overseeing of qualitative standards, but it is a denial of access to those who for any reason cannot partake in the benefits of such regulation. And this represents an unfair reward to a preferred group within the rights community. A strong bottom line position holds fast to the principle that if a "rights" system creates a problem, either the system itself or the way it is applied or both, must be changed.
Analogies are not as direct as real arguments, yet I was completely serious about the approach taken in the first paragraph of this opinion. It is a general prescription for immediately dealing with these issues. I'm enough of an optimist to believe in the possibility that this issue can be thoughtfully, openly debated, that timely equitable solutions be found, and at the end of the day we will be able to say 'we did a good thing, it wasn't such a bad idea after all.
To this I would add a second analogy: Imagine what would have to be added to our present health care system if we were to immediately expand and implement it on a global scale. Talk about gearing up for a major offensive involving every aspect of health care, a real humdinger, No? . With this in mind it is perhaps easier to see that in reality our own national interest is a much more workable model of this same exercise. The realities of our present system show not only great progress toward where we could/should be as a community. It also suggest that the give and take required of all to make fair changes is more closely within our means. A hop-skip-and-jump away when compared to taking the world burden to our shoulders, even though that would be of greater merit.
In closing, I would also suggest that it may be of use to consider some of the methods we would need to adopt if we were to seriously treat the world , and implement these when we look for and choose long term solutions to health care and accessibility problems in our own sphere of affairs.

Tripping Over Starlight In the Dark
I hope readers found some enjoyment in my last post. Whether it was read as fact or fiction it can be adjudged as representative of an intense individual, pathological response to perceived reality. Why pathological? my answer to this question considers ethical contradictions by juxtaposing the idea of the "pencil experiment" with and while being aware of the "Don't touch the wheel" advisory, which strips impunity from any such action.
The pencil trick proceeds on the premise of a mechanical cause/effect relationship between manipulating any material element and an irresistible permanent altering of Universal Reality. It is impossible to avoid a valid comparison of this with any other consciously directed individual action, where a result (predictable or not) is expected. Though it seems there is a great proportional difference in the sphere of influence intended by these two cases, the truth or illusory nature of either is a question of the physics of consciousness expressed through material forms. Causal constants, however distant and temporary are sought and relied upon in the same way navigators once charted geographic position, viewing light received from astral emissions which had been traveling for eons; a perceptual differential, illusory yes, yet still having an essential utility that can be said to have greatly effected world history.
My interpretation of the caveat "Don't touch the wheel" has several distinct levels of significance. I only wish to consider one at this writing. This level of reason accepts the general notion that reality has its own unified mechanical laws, which are no more or less complex than they actually are and evolve to be. It accepts that consciousness exists in a progressive variety of subjective states represented by material conditions which have original consciousness as the starting point and extension of this
out growth. As the ego sentience of this also evolves and wishes to create its own condition(s), it by its own distinct seemingly separate nature finds itself to be at some odds with the in which universal reality transpires. My hit is that the 'wheel edict" (the Great Wheel) stipulates/suggests that motion of the unified field has a natural direction and that in fact must turn itself in accordance with the laws which accept the energy to do so. Actively, the efficiency and propriety of ego sentience must be of only a certain quality to be an acceptable motivating energy toward this top-drawer end. It amounts to being and becoming what we really are,the greatest ongoing challenge of discreet liberated individual spiritual participation on a universal scale, a self guiding constantly interactive principle.
Life on the wheel can be a darkness of subjective hells ,complicated by our positioning sense of ego identification as we become non-contributing slaves; or it can be a perfect congress of amazing supra-mechanical play, which causes intrinsic patterning to naturally evolve. In my final analysis, it is not the outward form of perceived actions that can be judged of greatest merit, but the inner spiritual performance (which is beyond judgement).
My Advice:"Don't touch the Great Wheel." If you are going to pick up the pencil, move our hand in a perfect fashion, and lay it to rest the same way. It is our natural right to be the wheel itself.
"Come see me sometime: Oh' how nice, you came so soon.", amazing, considering how long it has taken us to come this far!

Something worth being arrested for:
Like a character out of a Whole Earth Catalogue serialized story , I have the strangest feeling that these days my story is being read as I live out its reality. I 'm left wondering when someone will finally call the authorities, and that before I'm able to transport to the astral realms, a cat in a black Kevlar vest grabs my medicine bag and says "make my day" . I was advised at one time "Don't touch the wheel" , this was after I realized that it was possible to control the ' Universe' while twirling a pencil in my hand. Well, 'the wheels are broken and the axle's draggin' and I'm looking very seriously at the pencil box again. Assuming that only the present moment can be directed, is a little delicate and scary considering that any mistakes made cannot be undone. All you can do is roll out the ball of play-dough and try again. I'm not going down with out a fight so all you god-dammed assholes out there, 'Let's Play'

A trickle of Schmaltz
Once upon a time, there was a leprechaun named Abe?. I got a good laugh this weekend when I sat down Sunday evening with my nine year old son ,taking a look at his school work of the past week. He seemed excited, taking out the folder himself, then pulling out a story he had written (in not half bad cursive) which had our favorite Celtic anomaly as a leaping off point. It didn't take me long to recognize that all the characters had names of familiar classmates who had earned a place in the tale by their virtue or lack off such. My adult brain immediately envied what I haven't done for a long time, which is,to lord over a scathing parody of a world I completely controlled the destiny of. Actually this isn't very high up on my list, but my envy was real. In the question and answer to follow I learned that most if not all of the kids had done something similar and had even haggled with each other to be portrayed in this way or not using' literary retaliation ' as a common bargaining chip. If the stakes had been any higher who knows how many parents and administrators would have become involved. Well, they all lived as dysfunctional as ever, after.

In place of anything better: " When I'm Makin' Lies Again"
This week, I'm not sure if climbing up the hill or racing down is any easier than the other. Here is the latest lyric substitute which is finding a few chords to rest upon. A gig somehow involving the intimate apparel industry is hopefully coming in the near future. Keep your seatbelt fastened and your legs crossed.
WHEN I'M MAKIN' LIES AGAIN
(Slow-walking ballad with pensive starts and stops)
You may be more fortunate than I am
do not have so far to fall,
do not have to fall at all,
do not have to fall again for higher yet to fly.
I'm no angel-child, no angel------ as if
these wings were real.
If you see me coming, crashin' down hard,
say a little prayer, send it falling down to me.
You may have a place where you can rest, Girl,
do not have to close your eyes'
don't forget the starry-skies
do not have to find sweet sleep, not knowing
what is best.
I'm no devil-child , no devil-----as if
these fires were real.
If you see me quittin',cashing in ---Babe,
breath one little prayer,
a path marked out across the stars for me.
Then again this song may not be mine - Girl,
doesn't hold much truth at all'
doesn't tell the tale so well'
can't expect much rain to fall
when sun can't also shine.
I remember laughter felt so good:
what is it I feel now upon these wings?
Scold me with a little prayer
for makin' lies again .
Chide me with a little prayer,
I need to laugh again.
Like when you said:
You're more like me, than you will ever know.
WHEN I'M MAKIN' LIES AGAIN
(Slow-walking ballad with pensive starts and stops)
You may be more fortunate than I am
do not have so far to fall,
do not have to fall at all,
do not have to fall again for higher yet to fly.
I'm no angel-child, no angel------ as if
these wings were real.
If you see me coming, crashin' down hard,
say a little prayer, send it falling down to me.
You may have a place where you can rest, Girl,
do not have to close your eyes'
don't forget the starry-skies
do not have to find sweet sleep, not knowing
what is best.
I'm no devil-child , no devil-----as if
these fires were real.
If you see me quittin',cashing in ---Babe,
breath one little prayer,
a path marked out across the stars for me.
Then again this song may not be mine - Girl,
doesn't hold much truth at all'
doesn't tell the tale so well'
can't expect much rain to fall
when sun can't also shine.
I remember laughter felt so good:
what is it I feel now upon these wings?
Scold me with a little prayer
for makin' lies again .
Chide me with a little prayer,
I need to laugh again.
Like when you said:
You're more like me, than you will ever know.

Can't wait-No Bread-No nothing else! Just to let all of you know the truth "I'm a blogging parent".
Some of you might be interested in this follow up to the Class Report interview I did with my kid Abraham. If you'd like to see the original, Get on the Web- search Classreport.org- State? Missouri- City? Independence- School? Truman high school, class of 74, Look for the review column and select ' Teach your parents well'- and you're there. This article titled Teach your parents well encapsulated a few very strong opinions and some off the cuff, down right insulting language. You may remember "Bush is a Fag" as representative, a crass statement of the kind I could never have coined, much less have gotten away with saying in that venue. I was surprised at the time, but let Abraham have his rant since he could offer examples and personal experience for his opinions.
Last Friday Abraham came home with a class paper he needed to return to school with a parents signature. On one side of the page was a short article on the history of the White House followed by reading comp. questions, on the other the title "If I were President " as the leaping off point for the meager essay he had written. The teacher's red ink included the following comments, "I'm displeased at your disregard for this assignment, "Very Bad Attitude!", and "Disrespectful". Abraham had done several things she objected to: he had completely blacked out the image of the Presidential Seal, circled and crossed out a picture of the White House, answered the question "Who lives in the White House now." with "stupid George W. Bush, capped off his essay by writing "I would never want to be president, because I hate government"., all on top of which he drew pointy dragon crests on the pictures of the cute little kids pictured pondering over the essays title.
I was left with the long weekend (presidents day) to sort out many ideas and feelings. I have never shirked stepping into the fray and taking up issues which have risen since Abraham entered public school. I've tried to use a certain("let's think about this to see what we all can learn") approach to my intervention. My appraisal led me to think this time around, here was one not worth much effort. To think that the teacher had subtracted 1/2 point for calling Bush stupid and that she had not more thoughtfully encouraged the fact of having an opinion made me think of pettyness and small potatoes.
Together we erased the art of personal opinion, undemonized the cute little kids,un-blacked the Seal, renovated the White House, wrote 'President George W. Bush, solved spelling, logic and fact problems with the essay, and modified Abraham's last words to read "I don't think I'd want to be president. It sounds like a hard job and things are really messed up". Unseen on our side of the table I encouraged the kid to have well formed opinions he could communicate well. I reminded him that he was not the only person around who he might share sentiment with. I discouraged him from defacing class papers until after they came home and asked him to tell his writing teacher that we had spoken and he understood things better now.
By the way, this teacher likes 60's bubblegum, mild R+B, jazz pop, and classical music. Abraham told me that one day she spoke to them of her hope that they all get a good christian education. I stopped by her classroom moments after class let out one day only to catch her sticking a piece of Bologna wrapped around mayo into her mouth. All that says a lot.

S/Q Showdown [Dharma, Dhjana-da-Dhjana]
S/Q Boogie: [ fast-steppin-out rock tempo]
One....Two....
One-Two-Three-- Oh!
Baby dance this dance with me -to
find out if we're really cra-zay
really,really cra-zay....We
won't find out ,if we don't buy the time,
So work it up slow,girl,
I'll be here waiting.
A song we're unknown to,
we could step into,
a fashion we could state
and move in time to.
Jumpin' on out and rolling it home
an' landin' run-ning on both feet.
Making up the low-down,
Making up the slow-down,
Spill the little cup-of
dreams we can't hold to.
Shakin' it is better than a
Na-na-na-No-----no-no
No-na-na-No of a
Nothing that is so complete.
Oh!---Baby let's make love sometime -to-
find out where our sole desire -is-
really seated.
Smash all the doubt /if you want it or not
Let your self down-slow
I'll be here waiting.
A wrong we're unknown to,
we could lead right to,
a fashion we could state
and be sublime to.
If somethin' is better than a
No-na-No-No---na-na
No-na-na-No
of a nothin'that is so complete.
Making up the low-down,
Lettin' the rules go
as we drive along now
heading for a show-down.
Remembering the place where
music comes from
is hidden right beneath our feet.
Baby dance this dance with me-------------------
Whao,Oh Baby dance this dance with me,
Baby dance this dance with me-to find out if we're
Rea-Lay-Cra-Zay!!!!!!!!!
Moving up the slow-down'
Speedin up the get-down'
remembering the dance where
we have come from
Slowin' up the move down'
Gettin' up the speed-down'
and dance again to find our feet.
Oh baby let's make love sometime
Baby let's make love, make love sometime---
Baby let's make love sometime and find out
if we're Rea-Lay-Cra-Zay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Extraordinary Royal Bi-Polar Expeditionary Force
Intriguing tales of adventurism(all the firsts) inter-continental flights, Valley of the Kings styled explorations,Everest attempts,Hollywood premiers, ninth inning victories, national radio broadcasts, seem like a faded photograph of obsession as an invisible void in the human psyche is filled by sensational instances. There are only so many hours in a day, a limit to what the struggle for subsistence can supply across the plurality. As hard as life may be,it figures that when tools and duties are dropped so easily, the home and workplace vacated (attention redirected) the needs of the moment pushed away, that our human race exhibits a desperate need for collective experience. In fact, many of us would declare injustice if we were displaced in the waiting line for collective information.
[Information/identity] and [individual isolation/activity] appear to be polarized extremes that collective experience would bridge and reconcile. Subscription availability and costs, unfair trade practice, management's marketing and manipulation are all downsides among the way this business is conducted. Stranded motorists on the Antarctic ice shelf abound as we become the metaphor of our individual capacity to be fully enfranchised. Existing evidence(limited notions) as to how collective reality is constructed, experienced and participated in must be supplanted by more useful knowledge,at the very least, if any future progress on Their Majesties Extraordinary Royal Bi-Polar Expedition is to be made in this circa.
Your humble servant,
Capt. Scotland

Avoiding the Switch
response to comment: by Jas.P. (resident augurate and raconteur of SpulgeNine@blogger)
"there is no substitute for experience and being experienced and for that matter a good night's rest"
The middle way mentioned closing the 'Cavalier post' is an appeal for diversity in the way we examine and respond to the small sphere of universe we experience. It suggests not being limited solely by linear concepts and pre-supposed associations.
In paragraph 4. an illustration is used: a sequence of visual symbols to represent alternative 'fashions' for directing our experiential and interpretive capacities.
The triangle: representing 3 points of conjunction(with each one point linked to the other 2) it suggests relations not made apparent by opposing points on a single line. However, a liberal appraisal would require that the relation between the 2 points be determined and in doing so a 3rd point of reference become apparent.
This is only one of many triadic applications[2 suggesting 3 and then demanding 3 in order to be understood] . A+B=C, with A painted blue,B painted yellow and C green could represent the basic triad of combination. The triad of the Mother Goddess as Birther,Lover,Destroyer and that of the 3 Fates, one weaving life's thread, one measuring it and one cutting its length, are 2 of the many instances figured in myth, wisdom story and recorded religion which add to the historic interpretive value of the triad. Even some modern constitutional governments are designed, show the capacity of triadic form to include self regulation.
Schools of reason have a grand precedent for invoking the triad to a proper application. But perhaps my own provincial notions of wisdom and beneficence as the guiding hand of " philosopher kings" does not allow( without some difficulty)me to include the Marx-Engels convention into this rock-n-roll hall of fame. Impossible, unless they are caricatured as pierced-out predator fashion, complete with anatomical trophies and blood on their hands. If Hegel had time-capsuled his dialectic synthesis and willed it only to the Logical Positivists, think how history might have played. The fact( of the matter) is that human [ nature/activity] lags far behind the frontier of human [thought/world spirit] . This thought sends me out for some fresh air every time: we might laugh at a picture of beggars, living in an old cemetery. Then... we hear them salute each other "O, most high.....O, king of kings. We might shake our heads unless we knew the openness of heart and selflessness they shared. In light of which,we might weep until rust began washing off our own heart.
There are two more examples of triadic expression to share before I close. The first is its use to commemorate the reconciliation of oppositions. Certain Zen schools have a tradition of creating a 3 line poem upon the experience of mastery. Aside from the fact that Hai-Ku is a single verse within the broader more developed poetic tradition of Hai-Kai, it suggests the depth of realization expressed in Hai-Kai, which is to be real-time intimate conversations in the language of the soul.
My final example is drawn from the Raga schools of North Indian/Hindustani music. In performances(which are uniquely improvised) a 3-limit is set upon the consecutive repetition of any melodic ornament or pattern, the objection is that it destroys the raga's beauty,to do so. It is interesting that( artistically) there are inappropriate instances of the 4-limit. This implies there are diverse proper ways to engage various thought space structures, and that this is an art.
The total-trip that the output of two electronic oscillators combines in a pattern, to produce a sine-wave, suggests a meaningful personal discovery.

Directed Critical Assumption
"Why doesn't someone drop a friccin' righteous bomb,then!......?
-Ol' flat-top-
from Novel Recriminations, by Georges Sand
With each instance of collapse, when a dominating power can no longer maintain its influence, a transition to dependence on the structural relations between secondary powers super-cedes within the paradigm.
These powers are then forced by circumstances to achieve an equilibrium which is based on dominance and the quantity of unifying attributes they share.
This is thematically inevitable, a destined sequential order, presented here as abstraction.
Assume, that by intentional design, a final resolution of these secondary relations were directed to a concluding equilibrium. A balance where observation discerned that dominance was no longer based on the singular attributes of secondary components and the way in which they were previously quantified.
This intentional design would have to impose complementary thematic organizing principles, order which suggested dependent co-existence as a constant. A model which would present interdependence fully involved in a equalized progression of varied organizational design. Yet varied only to the point of showing the mutuality of a new more unified structure and not one that is dependent to the overall dominance of any organizing design.

A Cavalier Projection
"Gettin' out inta' space, not waitin' fer' th crowd."- Junior Samples
Opposites appear to define each other. Black opposes white as an absence of the other. Left opposes right as a mirrored form. Pleasure, which can be experienced by itself, is more intensely encountered if opposed to pain. However experiences tend to over lap, conclusions are often drawn out and imposed arbitrarily on groups with a single common attribute. This type of generalization allows us to consider white, good and black, evil. It so becomes active in our unconscious makeup, creating links of preferred associations that are imagined as being consistently valid.
Modes of action are subjected to this same predisposition. Fearlessness (confidence) and fearfulness (caution) could be observed as oppositions, yet either mode would prove foolishly flawed if failure to obtain a preferred object was the result. Much of what could be called linear thought proceeds along lines temperamentally bonded to preference. It is typically horizontal, conforming to the same associations gravity has imposed on planetary surface dwellers. The tendency to rely on a horizontal point of reference comes along with the familiar territory, and a clear demonstration of this stability is balance, the exact compensation for equal opposition.
A mechanical linear success such as this is simple to illustrate: each single value working in relation to degrees of opposition with each other value and we arrive at a specific end. Perfect ( yes, no, maybe) and severely limited. In geometry a' cavalier projection' is defined as two oblique lines diverging from each other at a rate of 45 degrees. This interesting symbol (combined with a tendency to read from either left or right) show it to be a point of divergence, expansion, effluence and at the same time one of Convergence contraction and cessation. The symbol itself is not subject to gravity per say, but only our orientation.
Of course, a hair pin is incomplete: to transcend a merely equative value a visual symbol( as a system) must be closed, even if its purpose is to embody the illimitable. The dynamic symbol evolves, triangle, cross, square star, obtuse, acute, combined, superimposed upon, each variation revealing unique internal correspondences and cyclic qualities. At once the paucity of dividing two value points on a single line is apparent and a richer, more valid middle way between oppositions has been suggested. A deeper awareness of multiplicity that in reality is actually transpiring beyond more limited perceptions. It becomes an acknowledgment and an act of living, expressing and responding within a true set of potentials. If 'cool' can be defined . . . This says a good bit of it.
